Rail System

The fully laden trains, carrying 20,000 tonnes of ore, will depart the train load-out and follow the standard gauge, head hardened rail line to the port facilities. Train scheduling will allow, as far as practicable, for the laden trains to have right of way on the rail, with empty returning trains allowing passing by being moved to appropriately placed sidings.

Rail communications and signalling will be designed in such a manner to allow for appropriate redundancy to ensure a robust and safe operation of all traffic on the railway line.

A rail maintenance yard will be located near the port area where locomotive refuelling, locomotive and wagon maintenance facilities and rail control will be undertaken. Rail emergency response management will also be located at the rail maintenance yard.

A fuel train will collect fuel from the bulk fuel storage at the port and rail it to the mine site. This will reduce the potential number of fuel road tankers travelling between Conakry and the mine site, which will reduce any potential road incidents.

A logistics train, which will have the capability to carry containers and equipment to and from the mine site, has been allowed for. This will be to facilitate the transport of equipment, spares and consumables to the site, again reducing heavy traffic on the public roads.
