Bellzone
Environmental Management
underline

Protection of the environment during project development, operations and on mine closure is an important consideration when developing a sustainable and acceptable business model such as the Kalia Iron Project.

In order to better comprehend the environmental conditions of Guinea, Bellzone commissioned a desktop research report, which has established an understanding of Guinea’s Flora and Fauna regarding protected sites, forest, vulnerable areas, protected species and social constraints. The results of this study have been documented in a report developed by an independent consultant, titled “Kalia Project, Environmental Requirements – Environmental Flora, Fauna and Social Constraints with Respect to a Green Field Project in Guinea, rev D”

To ensure the environmental obligations are achieved and maintained throughout the life of the project and operations. The following list of management plans will be developed.

  • Groundwater Management Plan
  • Erosion Control Management Plan
  • Dredge and Disposal Management Plan
  • Training Management Plan
  • Traffic Management Plan
  • Mosquito Management Plan
  • Reclamation Management Plan
  • Mining Rehabilitation Management Plan
  • Fauna Management Plan
  • Chimpanzee Conservation Action Plan
  • Endangered Flora Management Plan
  • Cultural Heritage Management Plan
  • Incidents and Complaints Management Plan
  • Air Quality Management Plan
  • Noise Management Plan
  • Waste Management Plan
  • Surface Water Management Plan
  • Chemical, Fuels, and Hazardous Materials Management Plan
  • Occupational Health and Safety Plan
  • Emergency Response Management Plan

Bellzone understands that these plans will need to be approved by the relevant Government authorities prior to their implementation and would be the subject of periodic audits by these authorities.

Details of the preliminary environmental management plans and associated legal requirements have been documented in the accompanying document “Kalia Iron Project, Environmental Management Plan, Rev C.

Bellzone applies a consistent and uniform approach to achieve the required environmental standards and protection measures. Bellzone’s environmental management strategy continues to progress in line with current and planned works. Environmental systems and standards now in place at the Kalia Iron Project include:

  • Environmental awareness through the induction process
  • Established Environmental Management Plan
  • Established environmental procedures to minimise and mitigate potential environmental impacts
  • Ongoing environmental training and education of our employees
  • Environmental incident reporting
  • Environmental spill response equipment
  • Soil bioremediation

Local government bodies are carrying out preliminary environmental studies and audits in consultation with Bellzone and are in the final stages of issuing a preliminary report.

On approval of the mining convention and concession by the Republic of Guinea, Bellzone will conduct baseline environmental surveys in the areas that will be affected by the mine, rail and port developments and any associated infrastructure. Based on the outcomes of the environmental baseline surveys the environmental management plans will be further developed and defined. On approval of the Environmental Management plans, Bellzone will ensure that they are implemented throughout the project development and operational life of the facility.

Bellzone will appoint experienced and qualified consultants to conduct this important work. The appropriate plans will be developed in consultation with the CMDP and the Guinea National Environmental Agencies so as to ensure the outcomes are suitable and relevant for the Republic of Guinea. Bellzone will gain ISO 14001 certification and apply the associated principles to managing the environmental plans.
